About Follow Nashville

NashMash is a concept product created by Function Interactive's Labs. Its purpose is to take concepts of social aggregation and apply them to feeds from the Nashville community's online activity. The NashMash concept was created by Chris Ennis, better known as @dotrage on Twitter. To keep up with the latest news about NashMash, please visit or blog and follow@nashmash, @functionized, @dotrage and @devlabrat.

How does Follow Nashville work?

The Follow Nashville application is tied to several APIs to create the most extensive results from social websites. Twitter is the first of these social websites that NashMash is offering tools for. It is not the last. NashMash has targeted a half dozen websites to tap into and create a uniquely Nashville experience. Its completely unedited, unmoderated, and unapologetically Nashville. It's for the people, by the people.

How do I get myself into the NashMash list?
The only way to get listed in the NashMash Twitter list is to have a location set to the Nashville area or tweet from the area with a GPS enabled phone. Following Nashville area users and having those users follow you increase your chances that the NashMash system will find you and identify you as an authentic Nashville Twitter user.

NashMash Follow Nashville User Tutorial

This tutorial is divided into three parts: Public Site Features, Private Site Features, and Twitter Commands. If you still have questions regarding NashMash or have suggestions about how we can make this a better product for the Nashville community, please email feedback@nashmash.com.

Public Site Features

The NashMash public pages feature four content blocks. The top three content blocks display the following:

Current Twitter Users Detected in the Nashville area
Displays the total number of users on Twitter that NashMash has identified as being from Nashville.
Nashville @ Random
This feature includes an 'Open Sesame' button that will randomly choose a user on the list that you are not following and direct you to that user's Twitter page.
What is NashMash?
This feature gives a brief description about the NashMash site.

The fourth feature on the public site is a selection of four general features. The tabs above this feature offer simple navigation to the four general features.

These general features are:

Nashville Twitter List
An alphabetical listing on all Nashville area Twitter users recognized by NashMash. Each user's Twitter name is linked to their Twitter profile with a number to the right of the user's name that represents all tweets indexed for that user in the current month.

Nashville's Most Influential
A list of the top 50 most influential Twitter users in Nashville. The ranking system that rates each user is based on the number of Nashville area followers a user has, the number of Nashville users that the user follows, the number of mentions a user gets from other Nashville users and the number of tweets a user has. A formula is used to tabulate a score for each user that is displayed on the top 50 list. Each user in the list is linked to their Twitter page.

Nashville's Most Active
A list of the most active users for the day, week, and month. Users at the top of these lists have tweets than any other user on the NashMash Twitter list. Each user's Twitter name is linked to their Twitter page.

Nashville Tweets
A list of the most recent Nashville area tweets divided into two areas. The first list is the most popular tweets, as voted on by the Nashville community. The I Like button to the left of each tweet allows users to indicate which tweets they favor. The second list is the most recent activity from Twitter. The information bar to the right of the Twitter activity includes Nashville Twitter Statistics and a list of the day's most active users.

Private Site Features

There are powerful features available for you when you log in to NashMash. There is no registration process to login to NashMash. Your Twitter login is your passport to use the NashMash private features. Simply click on the Login tab in the top right corner and enter your Twitter username and password to login.

Once you are logged in, you will then be directed to your NashMash Dashboard. Your dashboard has a lot of useful information about how you are viewed by both NashMash and the Nashville Twitter community as a whole. Below is an example of the dashboard's statistical breakdown.

The dashboard displays 7 different pieces of data:

This information gives you the ability to track how well you are doing in reaching out to others within the Nashville Twitter community.

Twitter Monitor: Keyword Tracking
The second part of your dashboard page your Twitter Monitor. NashMash Twitter monitors are unique feeds from Nashville Twitter activity based on keywords. You choose the keywords you wish to monitor and NashMash can present local matching tweets and return them through the dashboard or through RSS feeds. The RSS feeds can be delivered in one group or as a different feed for each keyword. This gives NashMash users greater ability to monitor activity that matters to them within the local social graph.

Navigating the Site When Logged In

Once you are logged in to NashMash, a drop down menu option is available to the left of the Login/Logout tab in the upper right hand corner of the page. Click the tab with the down arrow to view all navigation options. An example is displayed below:

Commons

This feature is in beta and due to be released soon.

My Groups

With NashMash Groups, you can setup groups based on hashtags or retweet bot. The beauty of NashMash's hashtag groups is the ability to assign multiple hashtags to a single group. If you wish to create a hashtag group for the Nashville Predators, you can assign #preds, #predators, #predfans and any other keywords that might pertain to your group. All Nashville area tweets matching your hashtag criteria will be displayed in the group's feed.

Bot Groups allow a user to setup a feed to an existing bot account or create a bot account using Function Interactive's TwitSynth product. With retweet bots, a group of Twitter users can use a centralized Twitter account to broadcast Twitter activity. For example, if you have the twitter account @NashvilleRocks, you can have users send replies to this account and TwitSynth will use the NashvilleRocks account to rebroadcast your reply to the followers of its account.

My Likes

The My Likes pages displays tweets that you have indicated you like and your tweets that others have indicated that they like. The Like system is similar to opinion systems on popular social media sites Digg and Reddit. Everyone has an opinion and indicating which tweets you really like is a great way to make good tweets more visible to the community.

My Settings

NashMash offers several settings that give you the ability to customize your NashMash experience. These settings are currently divided into three categories: Privacy Settings, Tag Settings, and Keyword Settings.

The Privacy Settings allow you to designate if you want your Twitter name to be included in the NashMash list. You can also choose to opt in or out of NashMash's following features that are a part of NashMash Commons. You can also choose whether or not NashMash can feature you and whether NashMash can use your account when people use the Nashville @ Random feature.

Tag settings consist of 10 tags that you can set to identify yourself as a member who has an interest in a particular term. These tags are used by the NashMash Commons feature to match your account with others in Nashville that have chosen the same terms.

Keyword settings work in conjunction with your NashMash Twitter Monitor. As mentioned in Keyword Tracking above, each keyword entered will return tweets from the Nashville Twitter community that have a hit for a keyword.
